These ancient sandstone layers were once part of towering dunes that covered this region around 160 million years ago. Over time, they were buried, compressed, uplifted, and eroded by wind and water, creating the stunning patterns and textures that we see today. Some of the rocks have a white color and a wrinkled appearance, resembling brains or cauliflowers.
These are called “brain rocks” or “cauliflower rocks” and they are formed by a process called tessellation, where cracks develop in the sandstone due to stress and weathering. Other rocks have a red color and a wavy shape, resembling frozen waves or bubbles. These are called “wave rocks” or “bubble rocks” and they are formed by a process called soft-sediment deformation, where the sandstone is distorted by tectonic forces or gravity before it hardens. The contrast and variety of these rock formations make them a photographer’s dream, as they capture the imagination and evoke a sense of wonder. Some people even compare this place to Mars, but with more color and diversity. This place is truly a hidden gem and a geological marvel.
