Where you can enjoy the wonders of a UNESCO world heritage site and take part in some of the rugged skiing that has taken place here long before ski resorts were a thing here. Of course you can ski at a local resort 15 minutes from town and enjoy more relaxed adventures like going to a sauna and hot tub surrounded by snow. That will be for another post.

Mestia is the largest town in the Svaneti region. The unique landscape of the Caucasus Mountains is interrupted by the dramatic Svan towers that pierce the mountainside.

They have been around since the 9-12th centuries keeping generations of families safe for ages. I got to climb up one and see the city from the Margiani’s House museum.

This place felt like something you find in books far from everything it has maintained a community that has adjusted with times, but remain firmly rooted in their traditions.

Places like this are why I travel. The adventure is not just when you arrive, but the people you meet and the journey along the way. I never would have expected I would be coming in the winter especially a place as remote as this, but it was so rewarding.
How to get here? I took a bus that took 12 hours to get there from the capital Tbilisi, Georgia in the summer it is a bit quicker and way less dangerous. There is also a flight this allows you to fly there in a short flight if the weather permits in a 12 person plane.

If you do come in the winter be prepared for a lot of snow, wild skiing and a few groomed ski slopes, as well as some of the warmest hospitality in the coldest of times. This winter will be one I always remember and this place will stay in my heart forever. I already know I will be back because the adventures in the warmer months I can bet will be some of the best adventures of my life. Thanks everyone for opening my mind to go outside of the fears that I almost let hold me back from making this trip. It was so worth it.
