While you could spend much longer in Kyoto, we had so many other places we wanted to see so 3 days was perfect for our first time in the city!
DAY ONE ➡️
- Kennin-ji 建仁寺 is best known for being Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple. See the traditional Japanese gardens and taste some of the matcha at this temple known for tea cultivation! 🍵
- Ryōzen Kannon 霊山観音 was probably my favourite temple. It was so peaceful, with very few other visitors. The temple is dedicated to peace and acts as a memorial for all who died during the Pacific Theater of WWII. It’s most recognisable for the huge statue of Kannon!
- Kodai-ji 高台寺 is known for its stunning garden and historic tea houses - it’s beautiful in autumn 🍂
- Ninenzaka 二年坂 is a beautiful traditional street where you can buy souvenirs, buy tasty food and even visit a Starbucks in a traditional Japanese house with tatami mats.
DAY TWO ➡️
- Hokan-ji 法観寺 or Yasaka Pagoda is a beautiful five-storied pagoda. We didn’t go inside but the views are supposed to be great from the top of the pagoda! You can also capture great photos of the temple from the surrounding streets.
- Maruyama Park 円山公園 is a must visit for autumn leaves or cherry blossoms 🌸 make sure to try a matcha crêpe from the kiosk as well - it was so good!
- Chion-in Temple 知恩院 is a sprawling temple complex and has the largest wooden temple gate (sanmon 三門) in all of Japan.
- Heian Jingū 平安神宮 is a beautiful temple complex with an impressive torii gate on the lead up. There’s also gorgeous gardens to visit!
- Eikando 永観堂 is best known for being particularly magical at autumn 🍂 the Hojo pond is beautiful!
DAY THREE ➡️
- Kiyomizu-dera 清水寺 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with stunning views of Kyoto. It’s a pretty iconic site and is worth visiting. It gets busy though, so make sure to visit early!
- Take the train to Arashiyama 嵐山 on the western outskirts of Kyoto. It was cold and rainy when we went (but still beautiful) so we ended up not visiting the bamboo forest. However, it’s an absolutely lovely area to see! 🌈
